Get Ready to Sew your Tulip Table Runner

Finished Table Runner measures approximately 40″ X 15″.

Fabric Requirements:

  • Tulip Fabric- two Fat Quarters (if making all tulips the same), or two 5″ fabric squares per tulip.
  • Stem Fabric- Fat Quarter
  • Background Fabric- 1/3 yard
  • Border Fabric- 1/3 yard for simple border, 1/2 yard for pieced border
  • Border Accent Fabric (for pieced border)- 1/4 yard
  • Backing Fabric- 1/2 yard (if longarm quilting, you will need 1 1/3 yard)
  • Binding- 1/4 yard
  • Batting- 42″ X 17″ piece

Notes on fabric selection- you will want the two fabrics of your tulips to complement each other, but have enough difference to give it dimension. The fabric I have used in my sample is Tilda Songbird. Be sure there is plenty of contrast between the Background fabric and the Tulip and Stem fabrics. I recommend not using a directional fabric for the background, it can get complicated with all of the stitch and flip corners.

Because there are a number of small pieces, I strongly recommend starching your fabric before cutting. It will make a big difference in your accuracy and it will help the stitch and flip corners lay much more flat. This is the starch I use before cutting, and this is the starch I use while piecing.
